WebFix Studio · Product
An ordering app for independent butcher shops
A web app that takes orders at the counter and online, keeps allergies on each customer profile and turns the orders of the day into a preparation list. Built and run by WebFix Studio in Aalter, Belgium.
Screens from the demo version with a fictional shop. The interface is in Dutch.
Why we build it
Orders still live on paper notes
Many independent butcher shops in Belgium still take orders by phone and on paper: weekend orders, party platters, holiday menus. Allergies depend on someone remembering them, and before opening someone adds up by hand what has to be prepared.
The founder of WebFix Studio, Clovis Deviaene, grew up in a family of butchers. The app replaces the notes with one order list and a printable preparation list for each day.
What it does
One app for the counter, the online page and the preparation room
Every feature below is built and covered by tests. The status section explains which version is live.
Orders at the counter
Staff search a customer by name or add a new one, choose products by weight, per piece or per portion, and pick a pickup day and time. Closing days, holidays and the order cutoff time are taken into account. Each order can be printed as an order slip.
Allergies on the customer profile
The 14 allergens from EU food rules are stored on the customer profile. When an ordered product contains one of them, the app shows a warning while the order is being entered.
Online order page
Customers order ahead on the shop's own page and pay when they pick up. The customer and the shop get a confirmation by email. Allergens and units always come from the shop's own product list, not from the browser.
Daily overview
All orders for a day with totals per product, ready to print as a preparation list. The database version also sends this overview to the shop by email every day.
Customer list
Search and sort customers, see the order history of each customer and export the list as a CSV file for a spreadsheet.
Shop settings
The shop manages its own products, prices, allergens, opening hours and holidays, without help from us.
How it is built
Technology
Next.js and React, written in TypeScript, with Tailwind CSS. PostgreSQL for the shared database.
One code base serves every shop. Each shop is a separate tenant with its own products, prices, opening hours and branding, set up from a single configuration file. Automated tests cover the order flow, the database layer, the public order page and the scheduled jobs.
Status
Where the product stands
A first version is live. It runs on Vercel and stores orders in the browser of the device where they are entered, so today it works on a single counter tablet and as a demo.
The version with a shared PostgreSQL database is built and tested. With it, the counter, the online order page and the email confirmations use one order list. That version is the next release.
Online payment is not part of the app: customers pay in the shop.
Plans on AWS
What we plan to run on AWS
Nothing runs on AWS today. This is the setup we plan to move the app to.
AWS Lambda
The order API and the scheduled jobs, such as the daily overview email for each shop.
Amazon S3 and Amazon CloudFront
The web app, product images and printable files, stored in an EU region and delivered through CloudFront.
Amazon Bedrock
Two features we want to test: turning an order that arrives by phone or email into a draft order in the app, and a helper that suggests quantities for a barbecue, gourmet or fondue from the number of guests.
Company
WebFix Studio
WebFix Studio is a small software company in Aalter, Belgium, run by its founder Clovis Deviaene. The ordering app is our own product. Next to it we build websites for local businesses, and the app grew out of that work with butcher shops.
